may 25, 2019 | "The folklore museum in our near future: A museum for the community and its people"
In the context of the participatory research program "Small and large stories of Paros", the Paros Festival team in collaboration with the Association "Friends of the Traditional Settlement of Parikia" and the Department of Social Anthropology of the Panteion University, recorded a set of objects that have been collected with the perspective of the establishment of a museum for Parikia. In continuation of the effort to highlight and utilize the collection, Paros Festival invites Museology professor Esther Solomons to a speech that aims to inform the public about the possibilities and perspectives of a Museum in a local community, on Saturday 25 May 2019 at 20:00 in the cultural association Archilochos.
A note from Esther Solomon about her talk: We tend to think of folklore museums as nostalgic, predictable, and often frozen in time. Are there ways to change them, to provoke the interest of the public but also the essential involvement of the communities that support them? In my speech I will try to outline the possibilities of updating the role of these museums, their connection trends with local societies, their relationship with oral history, contemporary art and activism as well as their contribution to forms of alternative tourism and social coexistence. |
